Trying out Freestyle Weaving

I currently coming towards the end of my work placement at a craft studio called SAORImor. A Japanese freestyle weaving studio located in North Wales. The studio is run by Rosie and she mainly teaches weaving classes. However, she also weaves beautiful creations for craft shows and events.

My placement supervisor said that Rosie was keen for me to learn the weaving before I began my placement. I needed to fully understand the process and learn the SAORI approach to weaving. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect walking in. I was worried as I’d never tried weaving before and always thought it looked really complex.

I was completely wrong though, the SAORI approach to weaving is exactly my style. It’s all about letting go, trying something new and creating something entirely unique. There’s an attitude of there are no mistakes, which I really love. It’s really easy to learn and such a relaxing experience. Rosie helped me make a really pretty wall hanging. She slowly took me through the process until I got the hang of it

I love the small size of the piece of weaving. It’s perfect for next to a mirror or in the space above a light switch.

She let me pick whatever colour of materials I wanted. There were so many colours to pick from I couldn’t decide at first but then I settled on a pastel theme.

I was so happy with the end result and frankly surprised I could create something this nice on my first go. It’s going to be something I cherish forever.

If you’d like to find out more about Rosie’s business, SAORI weaving or classes here are all her media links:

Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed this post. Would SAORI weaving be something you’d want to try?

    1. Thank you Mary! It’s a really cute idea isn’t it? I think it ties the piece of weaving together really nicely
